Simply because BCAA’s are released from the liver into circulation enabling skeletal muscles to break down the BCAA’s for energy. During recovery when other fuel sources are available [such as carbohydrates and fats] BCAA’s are used in protein synthesis. This is what an athlete requires for muscle building. BCAA’s represent over 50% of the total amino acids released into general circulation to be taken up by the muscles.

While we spend much time on this Blog talking about adult nutrition, supplementation, performance and fat loss, far less is dedication to the importance of helping our children develop good food habits for life. It is a sad state in Australia that up to 1 in 3 of our young people have significant weight issues, weight issues that are likely to remain through adulthood unless identified and managed early.

Working as a paediatric dietitian for more than 10 years in the area of childhood obesity, I have seen the impact of childhood weight issues first hand. One of the main observations I have had during this time is that one of the common issues with our kids diets is that they tend to be inadequate in dietary protein to promote optimal nutrient intake and satiety (fullness) through the day; a breakfast of toast or cereal followed by fruit and snack bars at school, white bread sandwiches, fruit juice and numerous snack foods after school. While common, this dietary intake provides at least 50-60% of total carbohydrate, leaving kids vulnerable to fluctuating blood glucose levels and hunger throughout the day. Over time this in turn results in high insulin levels and weight gain.

The good news is whether you are actively trying to prevent or manage a weight issue with your child is that this dietary pattern is exceptionally easy to change. Simple focusing on protein rich food choices throughout the day, and looking for low GI , less processed forms of carbohydrate as opposed to processed white breads and snack foods and very quickly the dietary ratios shift towards 25-30% protein – a ratio known to promote weight control long term. This translates into eggs or baked beans on grain toast for breakfast, dairy rich foods for snacks and just one processed snack bar throughout the day. Not only does such an eating style improve your child’s nutritional intake but they are also likely to be fuller and more satisfied as a result.

Protein supplementation is not necessary or appropriate until children reach 14-16 years of age but this is not to say that our natural proteins including eggs, dairy and lean meats cannot be used a little more readily in our kid’s diets to promote their health long term. And who does not want that for their children?

I get asked this question everyday…“Am I taking the right Protein powder” or my mate suggested “blah blah”  cause it works for him so I went and bought it.

Well that not the way to choose the right protein powder for you now is it.

In much the same way we choose a lot of products we buy word of mouth is a big part of advertising but I’m here to tell you we need to think it through.

Ok so lets start with an example

Lets say two high school rugby union players are being coached by me on individual programs because both have different requirements, why would I give them the same protein?

Example A is a loosehead prop weighing 115kg at 25% bodyfat and Example B is a winger weighing 85kg and 9% bodyfat.

Now are we starting to see these 2 athletes? Individual athletes individual goals individual nutritional requirements

A= wants to maintain lean muscle mass and drop 3-4% body fat so a product like Hydroxy Burn Pro would definatley be my choice with over 30 grams of protein, 0.7 grams of fat and 3.8 grams of carbohydrate this would be a perfect choice.

B= wants to increase lean muscle mass and also gain 3-4kg of muscle mass and Bodyfat % be maintained so Nitrovol with added glutamine, creatine and  BCAA would be perfect with 35 grams protein, >2grams fat and 34.7grams of carbohydrate.

Now would either of these suit a female athlete?

Or what about a guy who wants to drop 15-20kg?

Every individual has a different nutritional need and therefore a different protein powder is required not to mention other possible supplements.

I have read countless studies from supplement companies claiming this that or the other about their products, but if its not double blind placebo and its not independently funded by another company/university then chances are its funded by that supplement company and findings will be in favour of the product as they will test for things they know.

SO without further ado recommendations of products are a great thing to read by compare every product and ensure the things YOU need are in the product you buy!

The combination of ingredients in NitroVol makes it a ready made and convenient stack to use. The ingredients have been selected so as to promote a range of beneficial physiological effects at the cellular level that are not able to be obtained via the ingestion of its ingredients individually. This means that NitroVol may offer many physiological benefits that cannot be obtained by simply consuming creatine, protein or glutamine individually.

Hi everyone,

Well the season has finished – it hardly feels like we have had time to draw breath since things kicked off in November. The races have come thick and fast.

I am delighted to say that John Jackson bounced back from a crash in the 2 man competition at the World Championships last week in Lake Placid to getting a top 10 place finish in the 4 man competition. The World Championships have 4 runs per competition and in a stirring 4th run John Jackson moved from 13th to 10th. The 3 men pushing Jacko are all new to Bobsleigh this year – to finish inside the top 10 is a fantastic achievement. We hope to build on that for next season as we look to move up the rankings. We have 2 more seasons left before the next Olympics so to be moving in an upwards way is very encouraging. I have enclosed a couple of pictures from the 4 man competition. If anyone is any doubt as to how hard Jacko was driving the sled this week – the side on view says it all!

From a performance point of view this season has been on of many firsts with our partners. This year was the first year of us working with F1 Team McLaren. It is also the first year that BSC have produced our race suits. It is the first year that KBC have made us a helmet unique to British Bobsleigh and also the first year that our athletes have been to the Michael Johnson Performance Centre in Dallas. The real benefit of working with our performance partners has only just started – the performance gains will increase as we get to understand each other better.

A big thank you goes out to all of you; The vans provided by Hendy, the cars from Volvo, the runner preparation tools from 3M, the race suits from BSC, the helmets from KBC, the athlete preparation from MJP and our design and print from First Colour. The services and goods you provide us with all help us focus our energies and resources on improving our performance towards our goal of Olympic medals in 2014. THis year we made significant progress in the 2nd half of the season helping us to believe.

I look forward to catching up with all you shortly. Season 2012/2013 starts today!!

Kind regards

Scott Allaway

After a few meetings and a lot of sore bums, we finalised the new paddle kit for Kenny & the boys. It was a really interesting trip….lots of chatter & banter during the innovation meetings…..so I think Kenny might have a job @BodyScience when he hangs up the paddle. They are today going to the Oceania & Nationals so there is a Gold medal at stake….and an Olympic dream.

So glad we are in sport! So glad we can be involved. Body Science 2 for 2.  Downhill Bobsled & now Kayak…at the highest level in the world! Our crew or team at Body Science is the best compression team in the world, even #Remarkable.
